This is my first review of a track from *Mega Man 11*. When I first heard this soundtrack, I hated it. The trance-y sound is just not my cup of tea—I feel like it’s hard to differentiate between themes since the style itself is sort of “vanilla”. I suppose the same can be said about chiptunes, but the limitations and simplicity of a chiptune actually tend to incentivize variation. That is to say, since trance itself is a genre, you’re not necessarily going for a certain genre when composing within in it, since you’re already there! But chiptunes are more of a blank slate, despite the unique texture that also come with their sound… ^preview
Having said all that, the more I listen to tracks from this game, the more they grow on me, and Block Man I think has emerged as my favorite track in the game after repeated listens. It’s pretty fun sounding, and a bit more thematic than most of the others, what with the construction sounds in the intro and such. Hell, even the basic “4 on the floor” style beat that serves trance so well is thematic here when thinking of a “Block” man, sturdy and well structured…yeah, I like this one quite a bit, actually! It’s still not winning any awards in any particular category, but that’s ok—it works well for Mega Man.
