Ah yes, everybody’s favorite first stage of *Mega Man X*. A somber theme for a somber start, as you shamefully put one foot *actually* in front of the other (repeatedly, even!) until you reach the first upgrade capsule so you can start playing the game *for real*.
Good thing this is a great theme, then! One thing I love about the X series is the tendency to drape a dark, melancholy cloak onto all of the cold-themed levels, instead of the usual cheery, sparkly fare. That isn’t to say I don’t appreciate [[Freeze Man - Mega Man 7|both]] [[Chill Man - Mega Man 10|approaches]], I just prefer the latter. It was a good choice to avoid a lot of guitar work on this track in favor of the “cold” sounding synth lead. The arpeggio intro sets the tone for a sparkly snow landscape, but the somber melody solidly anchors us in X territory in terms of mood. The B section steps it up a bit in complexity, which contrasts the simplicity of previous section nicely.
This track was composed by **Yuki Iwai**, and it was her only contribution to this game. But, she would to on to compose the entirety of X2, and boy did she clock in for that one! Not a bad start with Chill Penguin though—a solid track that sets the tone well.
