> [!tip] > Jump to #The Top 10 or #Full Ranking if you don't give a shit about the details. But when you're done malding about the placement of your favorite Robot Master, you can come back up here and understand the error of your ways. # Foreword Below is an ever-evolving attempt to rank all the Robot Master themes from the classic Mega Man series. I've gone through several methods of ranking, from pure feel, to coming up with my own metrics, to borrowing some metrics from others. The ranking may change over time for this reason, but I think that's part of the fun when talking about music - it's highly **subjective** and **contextual**, and there's always a different angle to consider at any given time! Having said that, we can still make an attempt at objectivity, given a certain criteria. With over a hundred songs in the list it's a challenge to be consistent, but here we go! > [!note] > This list is only for core Robot Masters - special characters like the *Mega Man Killers* and the dudes from *Wily Wars* are not included, since they are more comparable to Wily levels in my opinion. # Rating System While doing some research on how people rate music in general, I found an interesting system by one Rob Moura, called the [Spectreview Color Rating System](https://tapedeckpodcast.com/the-spectreview-color-rating-system/). I thought it was a concise and thoughtful way of approaching the problem, and the coloring coding idea is really cool, so let's attempt to adapt it for Mega Man music: > [!quote] **AESTHETICS (A)** > Judging how the music sounds on a purely sonic level. This concerns everything from production quality to how effectively the artist conjures beauty or emotion in the music. They key word here is "emotion", I think. Certain tracks conjure up a very distinct feeling, and those will score high. This concerns arrangement as well - some tracks have good melodies but don't really leverage the instrumentation (pitch bends, vibrato, etc.). > [!quote] **ORIGINALITY (O)** > Judging the ambition of the music in being novel or trying something new relative to previous works … This category is meant to signify when an artist decides to break the mold, and it should be rewarded on its own terms. Does it sound unique compared to other Mega Man tracks? Some tracks give us the standard formula, while others are clearly trying to do something different. > [!quote] **INTELLECT (I)** > Judging the capacity of the music to stimulate the mind … even instrumental or ambient music has the capacity to be judged on an intellectual level if the music is contextually presented as such. This one is probably the hardest to put a number to, but I will be looking for things like compositional variety and how strongly it ties together an overarching theme or idea. ## Scoring The Spectreview system is cute and all, but the problem is that it's not designed for ranking as much as it's designed for…well…coloring. So, in a brave effort to completely undermine the intent of the original system, I will make the following modifications to better adapt it to rank over 100 tracks: - Rate each category 1-5 instead of "high/mid/low" - Add a bonus point for having multiple 4's (consistency) - Add a bonus point for each 5 (standing out) - Add a an unweighted "bias" rating `B` to help break ties > [!example] Example effect of weighting > *note: "bias" is not important here* > > | `A/O/I/B` | Bonus | Raw | Final | > | --- | --- | --- | --- | > | `3/3/3/?` | 0 | 9 | 9 | > | `2/3/4/?` | 0 | 9 | 9 | > | `1/3/5/?` | 1 | 9 | 10 | > | `2/2/5/?`| 1 | 9 | 10 | > | `3/3/4/?` | 0 | 10 | 10 | > | `2/3/5/?` | 1 | 10 | 11 | > | `1/4/5/?` | 1 | 10 | 11 | > | `3/4/4/?` | 1 | 11 | 12 | > | `2/4/5/?` | 1 | 11 | 12 | > | `1/5/5/?` | 2 | 11 | 13 | The above demonstrates that ties tend to get spread out near the higher ranks and dissipate faster. But, even with that, there still will be quite a few ties, hence the tiebreaker "bias" category. ## Coloring Since we have to map five possible values down into "high", "mid", and "low", there is an interesting problem that occurs where some values are going to get under, or over, represented. I my case, I ended up with many "grey" colors since I wanted 5 to be the only "high", and there are many tracks with mixed 3 and 4 ratings which were treated both as "mid". So, in an effort to get more color variation, I decided to treat 4 as "high" if and only if there are no 5's and the rating is not `4/4/4`. The caveat is that some tracks with lower scores may have a brighter color, but ironically that's more in line with the original intent of Spectreview anyway, in the sense that it's not designed to indicate value (I do respect that he created a rating system only to call ratings stupid anyway). > [!note] > Also, for fun, I came up with a "mood" based loosely off each color. The moods are more broad than the colors, but they do help communicate the system a bit more. I may add a section at the end to show the color spread and/or explain the thinking behind moods, but it's probably not to hard to infer. # The Top 10 Before the full ranking, lets count down the top ten and say a few words about each. And if the ranking changes such that something new breaks into the top 10, I will do a new writeup for that track as well. %% run start ```js fold const svRating = tp.user.sv_rating const maxScore = svRating.maxScore() const grades = svRating.grades() const colors = svRating.colors() const metafile = dv.pages("#megaman and #ranking and #metadata")[0].file const top = metafile.lists.sort( e => svRating.getScore(e.rating), 'desc') .limit(10) .map((e, i) => ({ rank: i+1, name: e.name, rating: e.rating })) .values.reverse() const output = [] for (const [i, v] of top.entries()) { const {rank, name, rating} = v const pagename = name.toLowerCase().replace(' ', ) const banner = svRating.getRatingBanner(rating) output[i] = await dv.io.load(`${metafile.folder}/${pagename}.md`) .then(c => { let content = c ? c.replace("rating", banner) : '*Writeup pending*' content = content.replace(/^---[^(\-\-\-)]*---/s, ) return `## #${rank}) ${name}\n${content}` }) } await Promise.all(output).then(r => r) return output.join("\n\n") ``` %% ## #10) Freeze Man This one was an absolute surprise for me. I always dug this track as a kid, but it's not my favorite from the game and didn't really assume much from it when I started this list. But, when I switched my rating method away from pure feel to using actual criteria instead, this one shot of out nowhere from high-mid to just plain high for a couple of reasons I'll get to below. This tack was composed by **Toshihiko Horiyama**, who got his start composing *just* the password theme from *Mega Man X*, and would go on to compose most of the soundtrack for *Demon's Crest* before his work on 7. It makes me wonder that if Capcom put him on a game that clearly required a specific vibe to compose for, perhaps they realized early on that his style was strong in this area. Atmospherically and thematically, Freeze Man's theme is amazing. The intro melody is carried by cheery synth stabs, backed by a beautiful arpeggiating sparkly square, and immediately transports you to a bright and snowy landscape that speaks to both the stage and the robot master. There's another ice level in the top 10 that takes a completely different approach to the concept, but outside of that particular gem, this track is in my opinion the most solid ice-themed songs in all of classic Mega Man.
5/2/4/4enchantingA
> [!info] Fun Facts Toshihiko only composed half of the robot master tracks in 7, including Cloud, Turbo, and Spring Man, all of which are great for the same reasons. Ice Man's stage in "Power Battle" plays a CPS2 version of Freeze Man's theme, and the "Complete Works" version of this theme is also a bit different. But both have some weird choices going on with the arrangements, so I consider this one the bets version.* ## #9) Galaxy Man This feels like the quintessential "above average" Mega Man track - not amazing in any particular category, but does just about everything right. It sounds like **Yu Shimoda** had fun with this one! He also did Concrete Man and most of the Wily tracks, as well as the endless stage and shop themes. There is definitely a pattern in the sheer amount of groove this man brings to the table. I think the psychedelic disco sound is a fun way to channel the UFO theming. I wish I had more to say about it - I think "this track kind of slaps" sums it up nicely, though.
4/4/4/3solidA
## #8) Nitro Man I've been back and forth on this track being in the top ten, but I ultimately do think it deserves to be here. A solid track composed by the legendary godmother of Mega Man music, **Manami Matsumae**, who kicked us off with the original game's soundtrack, and was rightfully brought back to do a track on *Mega Man 10*. It's not very complicated, but in a good way I think. A retro synthwave style melody carries us through the nighttime highway stage, and compliments the idea of a motorcycle-transformer robot master waiting for us at the end. It has the feeling of telling a story, with the first section conveying a feeling of dramatic duty, and the second having a timeless feel as if we are taking on said duty. The third section feels tireless, as if we are powering through despite all odds, and the final section gives us a beautiful resolution that feels like victory and triumph. The arrangement itself is rather simple, lacking a lot bends and vibrato you tend to find in other high energy tracks, and yet it still manages to channel the sort of gravitas that you might hear in a Wily stage. I think that last point ties into the final thing I want to say here - it was kind of hard to score this track, to be honest. It's almost like the *execution* of the track is not as dramatic as the style it's composed in - the end result is this "final stage" sort of vibe in an otherwise simple package. But, all things considered, it *does* feel right to honor Manami Matsumae with a write up in the top ten, so I'm glad it's here for now!
4/4/4/4solidA+
## #7) Pharaoh Man Holy shit that intro! Holy shit that break down *after* the intro!! If there's one thing *Mega Man 4* does well, it's **not** sound like any of the other games. To me, this track is *the* poster child for "it's just a video game, they did not have to go this hard!"…but, lo and behold, **Minae Fujii** has no chill. And the *entirety* of 4 is like this, it's just that this particular track has the best balance in my opinion (followed closely by a Drill Man, mind you! 4 really does have some stand-outs…). If there's one thing *Mega Man 4* does **not** do well, it's have songs that sound anything like the robot masters they represent. I'm not sure what a Pharaoh is supposed to sound like to be fair…but they must be some cool-ass motherfuckers if this is what we're going with! And really, do we need something more than that? Well…yes, you do, if you want perfect marks in the "intellect" category that is. And yet, here we are, in the top ten anyway, because this track just slaps so hard.
3/5/4/4novelA+
## #6) Flame Man My favorite theme from _Mega Man 6_, which **Yuko Takehara** composed the entirety of. Tomahawk Man is a close second in terms of bangers, but Flame Man has this unique combination of playfulness and energy that stands out. The three-part progression builds nicely - we go from a lighthearted and carefree start, to a more more mysterious whimsical middle section, finally ending in a high energy east-Indian sounding groove that ties in nicely to the turban-wearing, fire-wielding robot master. Yuko also composed my favorite theme from *Mega Man 7* - Junk Man, so that makes **two** tracks from her that ended up being my favorite from their respective games. Not to mention her work on the Capcom "VS" series stuff that I love…this might be her sole entry in the top ten, but I'm glad she made it in so I could mention her. Flame Man is just a rock-solid track that has a little bit of everything you love about Mega Man music.
4/3/4/5enchantingA+
> [!info] Fun facts > The [Rockman Complete Works](https://megaman.fandom.com/wiki/Rockman_Complete_Works) version is kinda cool, but the arrangement is also kinda goofy so I prefer the NES version. There's also a really great [OC ReMix of this track](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W590ku9x1Yc) from back in the day that I kept in rotation for quite a while! ## #5) Gravity Man Gravity Man from _Mega Man 5_ - one of my favorite Mega Man tracks of all time. _Mega Man 5_ is full of tracks that have this sort of quite energy to them - like a steady movement that isn't super charged, but has all the forward momentum you need for an action game. Gravity Man just has it _way_ more than the other tracks. I remember being absolutely blown away by what **Mari Yamaguchi** was trying to do here. As soon as the intro kicks in, you can tell this track is on another level in terms of composition and atmosphere. It's got this eerie, other-worldly quality, mixed with an absolutely down-to-earth groove…wait, other-worldly plus down to earth? Is this the ebb and flow of gravity?? Reaching aside, there is a subtle complexity to this track that I think is quite special - the way it starts out kind of spacey, but with this mechanical sounding sprinkle of notes in the background. Then, moving into a slow groove that again has a sort of mechanical quality to it, then into a mysterious sounding section that also keeps the running notes motif that ties everything together. And then of course, the heavenly jazz break down at the end that beautifully transitions back into the A section. The whole song just comes off as very "smart" to me, and yet with an effortless flow to it. It's just so cool. Let's leave it at that.
3/4/5/5inspiredA+
> [!info] Fun Facts > Mari Yamaguchi also composed for the likes of *U.N. Squadron* and *Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts*, which all sound great. And I also want to give a special shout out to **Takuya Miyawaki** for a [beautiful](https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/mega-man-5-complete-works-nes-ps1-gamerip-2014/31.%2520Gravity%2520Man%2520Stage%2520PS.mp3) "Complete Works" arrangement of this theme. ## #4) Tornado Man This might sound a bit weird considering the rating I gave it, but I consider this to be very close to a "perfect" Mega Man track. Although I think a better word might be "quintessential" - it just perfectly encapsulates what a Mega Man song aims to be, which itself does not require originality or even complexity (those things still make a track special, mind you). The energy here is absolutely kinetic, hectic, and maybe some other words that end in "tic"…point being that the energy speaks to the theming of tornadoes in *some* way. Wind is not necessarily the first thing I think of when hearing this song in a vacuum, but in terms of the atmosphere befitting of a Mega Man level, it's got that fighting-to-save-the world vibe that does all the lifting it needs to. Compositionally, I count five distinct sections that are all different - pretty impressive for a Mega Man track. We have the intro that also doubles as the loop point (a technique you hear quite a bit, actually) and it works very well here. We then have the A section that establishes the energy, moving on to the bridge-like B section, and then coming to the outro-like C section. This is were most earlier Mega Man tracks would wrap things up, not that doesn't happen here - instead we get a final section that itself repeats, adding a bit more length before gently segueing back into the intro. It's the perfect compositional structure for a Mega Man track in my opinion. **Ippō Yamada** has exactly one track in this list, and this is it. He mostly worked on the Zero series before this, and did actually return for *Mega Man 10*, just not for any robot master themes. I never dug into the Zero series because the art style was not my cup of tea, but if this track is any indication of the quality of the music therein, then I've been sleeping on it!
5/3/4/5expressiveA+
## #3) Star Man Well, surprise surprise - another **Mari Yamaguchi** track! This one is similar to some other "sleeper" tracks in the sense that, when I actually started using metrics for the rankings, this one shot to the top of out no where due to the incredibly strong atmosphere and theming. It's just _real_ hard to find something wrong with this track. It perfectly encapsulates the feel of the stage and the theme of the robot master, on top of being a solid composition and having a nice groove. *Mega Man 5* is definitely my personal favorite in the series, and I suppose it shows, with multiple tracks in the top ten at this point, despite having five more games in the series come *after* it. Star Man is just so *wonderfully weird*. Maximum space vibes, maximum whimsy. There's not many tracks that fit a level *and* robot master this hard. It's just a joy to listen to. I don't even feel like I need to say much about it, it's one of those tracks that speaks for itself.
4/5/5/4intriguingS
## #2) Chill Man I'm not going to lie - one of the main reasons this track scores so high is because it's one of the most unique sounding ice themes in the entire Mega Man series, and "originality" is one of the harder metrics to hit as you may have noticed. But one thing ice themes almost always do well is combine a pleasing soundscape with strong theming. So, in regard to the metrics, an ice theme that happens to sound original on top of this is theoretically going to place very high. And here we are. When the track first opens, you are not sure what you are in for. It doesn't necessarily sound "good" off the jump. But it does establish a very eerie, foreboding atmosphere. Then the B section hits, and we are greeted with this sort of desperate soundscape that drives the fact that we are **not** just doing the usual sparkly snow-level theme that you hear most of the time. The following two sections give us a feeling of powering on through a harsh environment with a sort of determination fitting of Mega Man himself. And the final section before the loop brings home this feeling of danger, while giving us a variation of the intro section to bring things full circle. Which brings us to another point I need to make about this track - very much like Tornado Man, this track has five distinct sections that do **not** repeat at all! It cannot be understated how rare that is in the classic Mega Man music-verse - It goes something like I-A-B-C-D-E where "I" is the intro. **Shusaku Uchiyama** worked primarily on *Mega Man 8* before this. His style is, not surprisingly, quite chill, but is also decidedly upbeat. With Chill Man, he takes things in an unexpected direction with the darker vibe, and it just works so beautifully. To my knowledge, this is the last composition for the Mega Man series that he made, and I'm really glad that for 10, they decided to gather up composer from all the pervious entries - I think it's why we go some really special stuff on 10 in particular.
5/5/5/4masterfulS+
## #1) Blade Man **Akari Kaida** worked on _a lot_ of stuff before making it to the mainline Mega Man series - most notably the Battle Network series, but also some EXE and ZX stuff. Picking her up for a track on _Mega Man 10_ was definitely not a mistake. Blade Man has one of the most compositionally interesting tracks in the whole classic Mega Man series. We start with a melancholy yet dramatic intro, and then we transition into a slow moody middle section that really fits the castle aesthetic. You don't often hear sections like these in Mega Man when it comes to robot master themes - this sort of slow moody stuff is usually in exposition or cutscenes, so it comes off very unique in this context. And then we transition from there into a high energy final section that extends upon the drama from the intro and lends itself to the loop nicely. It's not the complexity of the structure that is impressive, as much as the complexity of the melodies and the bold choices that were made for the idea. It really stands out in a sea of otherwise "staple" Mega Man themes. The interesting thing is that, when it comes to theming, I originally wanted to give this a 4 in the intellect category due to the fact that this theme doesn't necessarily conjure up any images of blades. But when you play the level, which I mentioned being set in a (medieval style) castle, it again really does fit the setting. Combine that with the fact that the intellect category is also where we gives flowers to composition and arrangement - this track is just doing so many interesting things that I just had to give it a "5". The section after the intro has this military-style marching percussion, with these sort of crashing sound effects in the background that give the impression that there is some sort of battle happening outside the castle walls. It's really quite creative. If it weren't for small things like this, it would be a much harder fight between the top three. Much like Star Man, Blade Man would not take the number one spot in a *personal* top ten list…but once I started applying metrics to the situation, this one is simply undeniable when you really sit down and listen to it. It's just kind of a fucking masterpiece.
5/5/5/5masterfulM
> [!info] Fun Facts > My personal top ten would look something like Gravity, Needle, Spark, Junk, Gyro. %% run end last update: 2025-08-18 00:47:22 %% # Full Ranking > [!info] > For fun, I highlighted tracks with full bias to show how much it influences the ranking. > Rating key: aesthetics / originality / intellect / bias | score %% run start ```js fold const svRating = tp.user.sv_rating const maxScore = svRating.maxScore() const grades = svRating.grades() const niceObsidian = '221722' const mapper = (e, i) => { const ratingArray = svRating.sanitizeRating(e.rating) const score = svRating.getScore(e.rating) const color = e.rating.includes('4/') || e.rating.includes('5/') ?
