> Seems like every article about Zettlekasten is egregiously verbose about explaining the system. I just wanted the quick-and-dirty about what it is and how you use it! The following is just that, including my current application of it within [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/)

## What It Is
A method of organizing thoughts in note form, designed to effectively capture knowledge and produce meaningful finalized writings.
## How to Use It
There are 4 Note types (though some articles seem to leave out the last):
- **Fleeting** - daily thoughts and observations
- **Literature** - notes taken on actual content
- **Permanent** - fully realized writings, sourced from the above
- **Structure** - indexes for related permanent notes
## Obsidian Implementation
My vault is primarily for **published** content, so that informs the structure, but aside from that it’s kept as simple and straightforward as possible:
- :RiFolderFill: Fleeing
- Daily notes, e.g., “2025-09-01”.
- Random notes, usually one word titles with no formatting concerns.
- :RiFolderFill: Literature
- Titled as in `[Media] - [Title]`, e.g., “Book - Dune”. [^1]
- :RiFolderFill: Zettlekasten
- All permanent notes, titled and formatted as meaningfully as possible.
The “Zettlekasten” folder of permanent notes are the ones that are published (as you can see on the site!), hence not naming it “Permanent” since that would be lame :).
